Expect a surpirse in the mail soon" I was so excited to get this, so if you're out there, THANK YOU Secret Santa!!!

Won:

And, a little announcment too....for any of you who actually read my blog and such, you'll know that I already have a copy of Hush, Hush. So that means that I will be holding my first contest soon!! Stay tuned to win a copy of Hush, Hush.

A huge thank you to Garage and Simon & Schuster

Freefall by Mindi Scott

Published: October 5, 2010
Publisher: Simon Pulse

Summary: How do you come back from the point of no return?
Seth McCoy was the last person to see his best friend, Isaac, alive, and the first to find him dead. It was just another night, just another party, just another time when Isaac drank too much and passed out on the lawn. Only this time, Isaac didn't wake up.
Convinced that his own actions led to his friend's death, Seth is torn between turning his life around . . . or losing himself completely.
Then he meets Rosetta: so beautiful and so different from everything and everyone he's ever known. But Rosetta has secrets of her own, and Seth soon realizes he isn't the only one who needs saving . . .

My Review: I had two reasons for reading this book. #1 I've heard really awesome things about it and #2 It's on the Contemps Challenge book list. At first, I must say that I was a little confused almost, I thought that Freefall was more about Isaac and his life and death. But there wasn't a whole lot of this story happening. So I put preconceived notions about this book out of my head and started again. In so many ways, Freefall reminded me of my favourite book, The Outsiders. Maybe it has something to do with Seth, Daniel, Jared, Mikey and Isaac being brothers and really close friends (Remember Sodapop, Dallas, Ponyboy, Johnny and Darrel?) And the whole seperation of class, such as "trailer trash" and "rich bitches" in Freefall, and the "greasers" and "socs" in The Outsiders. There were definitely similarities between these two books, but yet they were both clearly their own story.
The characters in Freefall are well-developed, and genuine. We got to know about Seth McCoy and who he is. There were times when I felt bad for this kid, who was the last person to see his best friend alive, and the first one to see him dead. I couldn't imagine what that might do to someone. Then we have Kendall who is just this wild and crazy friend who just happens to always be there at the most inopportune moments. And then Rosetta, who just seems like the girl next door.
I really enjoyed reading Freefall! I like how Mindi Scott seems to be able to connect with her young readers. This novel is about dealing with, and overcoming highschool issues -binge drinking, drugs and even small things such as stage fright- and finding someone to help you overcome these. It is clear that Mindi wants to connect and help her readers who are dealing with these issues (or know someone who is), and she does it in a way that is honest, fun and not like she is trying to drill the message into your head.
Overall, Mindi Scott's writing reads as if shes been writing her whole life. It is flawless and I can't wait to read more of her work!

Author Interview - Emma Michaels

I'm so excited to have Emma Michaels, author of The Thirteenth Chime here at Stellar Book Blog! I read this book, and I really enjoyed it! You can read my review here, but for now, enjoy my first interview ever!

Thanks Emma Michaels for coming to my blog and having this interview with me. I'm honoured that you are my first author I've ever interviewed! So thanks again, I know you're busy and I really appreciate your time.

Q1 - How did you come up with the idea for The Thirteenth Chime?

A) I was born and raised in California. I was visiting my fiance in Washington state the night I had my inspiration for The Thirteenth Chime. For those of you who know Cali, we don't get many storms, at least not the kind you can experience in Washington.  The storm was so bad it knocked out the power and we went to the neighbors to share a few flash lights to wait out the storm. Thunder shook the house and the wind was howling. Just then, the antique grandfather clock in the house began to chime.
The sounds echoed throughout the house in sync with the thunder and wind. I remember unconsciously reaching out for someone's hand to hold and it was in that moment in time, my heart pounding, that The Thirteenth Chime came to me.

Q2 - When you're writing a book, do you have any special habits or anything that you need to do in order to write? (For example listening to music, being somewhere in total silence, starting to write the end or middle of the novel first, etc)

A) I don't have any real special habits, but I do find that certain things help me. For instance, if I am writing a particularly emotional piece, I find that certain kinds of music will help me to set that mood. I also find that I write better at my own desk and space than I do anywhere else unless I am traveling. And at the end of the day, a small piece of chocolate to reward myself never hurts! *laughs*

Q3 - When writing The Thirteenth Chime, did you know the whole story before you wrote it, or did you write it as you went along?

A) Writing a story is like telling a story - it comes to you. I find that if a writer takes a step back and sits in the passenger seat rather than the driver's seat, allowing the story to tell itself, that the book will come alive. I think in a way that writers are merely observers who are fortunate enough to share. Only we just happen to be observing something that comes from inside of us.

Q4 - What can we expect to see from you with any upcoming novels?

A) Book #2 in A Sense of Truth series is on its way and everyone can expect to see it next year! I also have two additional series I am working on and a standalone novel that I hope to share soon. So you can expect to see many more novels from me as long as you keep reading!

Q5 - What was your initial reaction when you saw the finished copy of The Thirteenth Chime for the first time?

A) Disbelief. I couldn't believe that what I was seeing. It was a long journey but a worthwhile one!

Q6 - Describe The Thirteenth Chime in one word.

A) Dissimilar.

Q7 - What do you do when you aren't writing?

A) Promoting. *laughs* I think I spend more time out marketing than I do writing, which considering how much I write is something else! But when I am not doing anything along the lines of my books, I'm either working out or reading. I love to read and you will always find a good book near me.

Q8 - Who are your favourite authors and what are your favourite books?

A) Tamora Pierce and Sharon Shinn. You should definitely check out "In the Hand of the Goddess"! Though a lot of the tenners this year have been making it to my favorites lists!

Q9 - Just for fun, if you could be any super hero, or have any super power who, or what would it be?

A) I think Spiderman (or woman, in this case). I would love to have spidey-sense and being able to shoot out webbing to pull a piece of chocolate to me quickly would really come in handy! ;) *laughs* Just kidding. I would love to have the ability to shift things with my mind like the movie Dark City because I can hardly even imagine how many people that could help. Imagine being able to resurrect areas hit by distruction and help crops grow so that the hungry could have food. It would mean everything to be able to help so many people.

Thanks again Emma for coming to my blog, and being my first ever interview-ee, I hope you had fun! I sure did!

I did and thank you so much for having me and to everyone reading!!!
Sincerely,
Emma Michaels

The Thirteenth Chime:

No one knew of its existence until it was removed from the attic upstairs.
In a beautiful house that overlooks the sea, an antique clock has the power to change the course of their lives.
The power the clock resonates will not only force Destiny and ex-boyfriend David on a journey into the depths of one man's mind long dead, but into the mind of a man filled with hatred and bent on revenge.
With the only clues to the nature of the clock having disappeared into the sea, Destiny and David must retrace the steps the man had taken into the darkness, before they fall prey to the trap he had set in motion over half a century ago.
Hatred never dies.

In My Mailbox (November 14, 2010)

In My Mailbox credit goes to The Story Siren

This week, Chapters Book Stores had a "Mom's Night Out" complete with an extra discount. I was totally excited! Walking through the store, I felt like a kid in a candy store. There were so many books that I wanted to pick up and read, but I limited myself to getting only 2. So here they are, and the reason behind why.

Bought:
The Vampire Diaries The Awakening and The Struggle by L.J. Smith - I absolutely love the T.V. show, and Damon has to be my favourite character ever. I wanted to see what he was like in the books, and see how he differs from book to tv.

Dracula by Bram Stoker - This is a popular work of fiction, and I have yet to read it. I've heard great things about this book, and I'm looking forward to reading this! People say that it is truly a scary read, so I can't wait!

That's it for this week. What's in your mailbox?

Top Ten Tuesday - Top 10 Most Unfortunate Character Names

Top Ten Credit Goes to The Broke and the Bookish

*I'm just going to say that for the record I think the names in books mean a lot, and where some of these names are odd, and strange, it's nice to have a change from just your normal, common names. These are just some of the oddest, strangest ones I've come across*

So here they are, my top 10 'strangest' character names:

1. Ponyboy Curtis from The Outsiders - This is my favourite book of all times, and I absolutely adore Ponyboy, but his name just makes me giggle!

2. Sodapop Curtis from The Outsiders - Of course we couldn't have PonyBoy here without Sodapop!

3. Two-Bit Matthews from The Outsiders - Another strange name from my favourite book!

4. Stevie-Rae Johnson from The House of Night Series - This name isn't that it's strange, its just very southern and twangy. Or "Okie" as they call it in the books.

5. Luce from Fallen - I was reading it as 'Lucy' for the most part of the novel. I thought L-U-C-E was just a different way to spell it. Then I saw a video of Lauren Kate reading from her novel calling her Luce (loose - like a loose tooth)

6. Embry Call from New Moon - I liked Embry the character, but the name had me thinking of an embryo - which I didn't care to think of while reading this book.

7. Mundungus Fletcher from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Mundungus - really?! Need I explain this one?

8. Mafaldo Hooch from Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone - Sure, I get it, they are witches and wizards, but must we call her Madame Hooch?

9. Infinite Darlene (born Daryl Heisenberg) from Boy Meets Boy - I don't even get this one. Infinite Darlene just sounds way over the top and out there. I guess it's a perfect fit for a drag queen!

10. Old Nick from Room - I think this had more to do with the actual events of the novel. Kidnapping and keeping hostage is creepy, and Old Nick is a creepy name, so it worked well in this case.

That's my top 10 for this week, who do you think has the 10 most unfortunate character names?

Fallen by Lauren Kate

Published: December 8, 2009
Publisher: Random House Children's Books

Summary: There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price''s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He''s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.
Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can''t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.
Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

My Review: I love a book with a great cover. I admit, I really do judge books that way. And Fallen has to be one of the prettiest covers I've seen in a while. I was immediately drawn in by the dark colours and the stunning girl on the front. The long dark hair and the gorgeous black dress she is wearing is enough to draw you in, but then you look closer and see the eerie forest and the black birds and you know that this should be a great read.
From The Beginning, Fallen is a page turner. The writing and the story draws you in and you don't want to put it down. This novel has suspense, and I really enjoyed that for the majority of the book we were on a huge cliffhanger without getting into the whole Fallen Angel part too early on. We got to meet the characters, quirky ones and all, and have some character development and watch relationships bloom slower than some other novels out there right now, and this was a nice change of pace.
The characters are interesting. First, we have Luce (Lucinda Price), the 'typical' protagonist who falls for the wrong type of guys - the one who flips her off before they meet, and the cocky, full of himself guy who wont give up. Then we have Daniel Grigori, the sexy, dark and mysterious guy that makes Fallen worth reading. Ther other characters, such as Arianne, Gabbe, Cam, Roland, Penn and Molly keep the readers guessing - they are in a reform school with backgrounds that no one really knows, therefore the readers don't know who to trust.
Overall, Fallen was a good read, and Lauren Kate is a great writer! I know that there have been some pretty harsh reviews out there (goodreads.com) but I enjoyed this book. Sure, Luce was a bit naive at points, but that's just a character flaw that makes Fallen the book it is. And I'm looking forward to reading Torment as soon as possible!
